Islamic finance has become an important part of capital markets in many countries, and investor demand for Shariah-compliant products continues to grow. For the institutions that run those markets, offering Islamic instruments is not only a product decision. It changes what their technology has to do.
Sukuk have their own lifecycle
A sukuk is not simply a bond with a different name. Its structure, payments and lifecycle events follow principles that differ from conventional debt. Systems that issue, trade, settle and service sukuk have to understand those events, or operations teams end up handling them manually.
Screening and purification
Shariah-compliant investing depends on screening: deciding which securities are permissible, based on the nature of a company’s business and its finances. Where some income from an investment is not permissible, purification calculates the amount that must be set aside. Both need to be consistent, documented and repeatable, which makes them a natural fit for software rather than spreadsheets.
Compliant financing and margin
Brokers that offer financing to clients need structures that comply with Shariah principles, including how margin is handled. That affects how credit and margin control is designed in the brokerage systems.
Designed in, not added on
The most common mistake is to treat Islamic finance as a series of patches on conventional systems: a special case in one module, a manual process in another. That approach becomes harder to maintain with every new product. It is more reliable to treat Islamic finance as a capability across the platform.
Islamic finance works best as a capability across the platform, not a patch on one product.
How OTS helps
OTS develops Islamic finance tools. We do not provide financial or Shariah advisory. Instead, we work with each institution to understand exactly what it needs. Our financial specialists then design the tools, covering areas such as sukuk lifecycle management, Shariah screening and purification, and Shariah-compliant financing and margin structures, and our engineers build the software that runs them.
